2 Day Varanasi Itinerary - Perfect Kashi Plan from Dawn to Aarti

2 Day Varanasi Itinerary - Perfect Kashi Plan from Dawn to Aarti
Quick Answer

Quick Answer: Two days in Varanasi is enough to cover the sacred essentials — Kashi Vishwanath, the ghats, the Ganga Aarti, and Sarnath — if you plan around the rhythm of the river. Day 1 runs from a sunrise boat ride (5:00 AM) through the old-city temples to the grand Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat (around 6:00 PM in winter / 6:45 PM in summer). Day 2 is for the quieter south: Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat (around 5:30 AM), Sankat Mochan, Durga Kund, BHU, and Sarnath. Budget ₹3,000–₹6,000 per person for the two days, excluding travel to Varanasi.

Quick Enquiry

Namaste. I am Rohit, a guide. I have been helping pilgrims for the past 8 years. And in those years, I have learned one thing about Kashi. You do not “see” Varanasi. You move with it.

The city wakes before the sun. The ghats fill at dawn. The temple queues build through the morning. The old lanes empty by noon. And then, as the light fades, the entire riverfront turns toward Dashashwamedh for the aarti.

This two-day plan follows that rhythm. It takes you from the first light on the Ganga to the last flame of the evening aarti. It is not a checklist. It is a sequence built around the hours when Kashi is most itself.

Let us begin.

Day 1 — The Heart of Kashi, Dawn to Aarti

Day 1 is the sacred core. It begins on the water and ends with fire.

Dawn Boat Ride from Assi Ghat

Time: 5:00 AM – 6:30 AM

Start at Assi Ghat, the southernmost major ghat, and board a traditional wooden rowing boat. As the sky turns amber, the boatman rows upstream past the ghats — each with its own story, its own gods, its own history. You will see pilgrims descending the steps for morning ablutions, priests performing rituals at the water’s edge, and the smoke rising from Manikarnika’s cremation fires in the distance.

Boat cost: ₹200–₹300 per person (shared); ₹800–₹1,200 for a private boat. Book the boat the evening before through your hotel to avoid early-morning haggling at the ghat.

Photography tip: The best light hits the west-facing ghats between 5:45 and 6:30 AM. Ask the boatman to pause near Manikarnika for a few minutes — but keep your camera away out of respect for the cremation grounds.

Subah-e-Banaras Morning Aarti

Time: 5:30 AM – 6:00 AM (summer) / 6:00 AM (winter)

Disembark at Assi Ghat and catch Subah-e-Banaras, the morning ceremony that combines a sunrise aarti with classical music and yoga. It is intimate and worlds apart from the grand evening spectacle.

Timings: The morning aarti at Assi Ghat starts around 5:30 AM daily. Arrive 15 minutes early — it is far less crowded than the evening ceremony.

Cost: Free. Flower-and-diya offerings cost ₹20–₹30 from vendors at the ghat steps.

Breakfast in Kachori Gali

Time: 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM

Walk or take an auto to Kachori Gali near Dashashwamedh Ghat for the most iconic breakfast in Varanasi. The star is dal kachori served with spicy potato sabzi — crispy, flaky, and addictive. Pair it with hot jalebis from the neighbouring stall.

Where to go: Ram Bhandar in Thatheri Bazaar (since 1937) is the undisputed king. A plate costs ₹30–₹40.

Winter special: Between November and February, look for malaiyyo — a frothy, saffron-laced milk dessert that is gone by 11 AM. Try it near Thatheri Bazar or Chaukhamba.

Kashi Vishwanath Darshan

Time: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the reason many pilgrims come to Varanasi. The corridor, opened in December 2021, has made the complex more spacious, but the queues are still long.

Darshan options:

Option Cost (2026) Waiting Time
General Darshan Free 1–3 hours weekdays; 3–8 hours weekends and Mondays
Sugam Darshan (official “VIP”) ₹250–₹300 30–60 minutes

How to book Sugam Darshan: Only through the official portal — shrikashivishwanath.org or the “Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham” app. Dozens of unofficial sites use similar names; do not book through them.

Temple rules: Phones, smartwatches, cameras, and power banks are strictly prohibited inside. Leave them in a locker outside or, better, at your hotel. Footwear must be removed — wear slip-on shoes.

The Old City Temples — Annapurna and Kal Bhairav

Time: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

After Vishwanath, walk to the Annapurna Devi Temple, dedicated to the goddess of food, and then take an e-rickshaw via Maidagin to the Kal Bhairav Temple, the guardian deity of Kashi.

Why Kal Bhairav matters: Local belief holds that a pilgrimage to Kashi is incomplete without his darshan. The temple is small and the queue is short.

Lunch and the Afternoon Rest

Time: 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM

The old city slows down in the afternoon. Have lunch — a simple Banarasi thali or chole bhature — and rest. In summer, move the midday temples to early morning and rest from 1 to 4 PM.

The Ghat Walk from Dashashwamedh to Manikarnika

Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Walk south along the riverfront from Dashashwamedh Ghat toward Manikarnika Ghat, the working cremation ghat. This is a 45-minute walk through the most historic stretch of the ghats.

The essential rule: At Manikarnika, put the camera away entirely. No photographs of pyres, bodies, or mourners, ever. Keep a quiet, respectful distance.

The insider route to the aarti: Instead of walking down the main Dashashwamedh road, take the narrow lane through Vishwanath Gali and exit near Ahilyabai Ghat. Walk along the riverfront to reach Dashashwamedh from the side. You will bypass the heaviest crowds and often find a better diagonal viewing angle.

The Grand Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat

Time: 6:00 PM (winter, Oct–Mar) / 6:45 PM (summer, Apr–Sep)

This is the centrepiece of Day 1. Seven young Brahmin priests, in white dhotis and saffron kurtas, stand on raised platforms facing the river. A conch blast opens the ceremony. Then come the incense, the camphor flame, and the great multi-tiered brass lamps swung in slow arcs, with bells, chanting, and the crowd’s own devotion rising around it. It lasts about 45 minutes.

Where to watch:

Viewing Option Cost Notes
Ghat steps Free Arrive 45–60 minutes early; the steps fill fast
Shared boat ₹100–₹300 per person Best unobstructed view; board by 4:30–5:00 PM
Private boat ₹2,500 or more Quiet and flexible

Important: There is no official VIP ticket for the Ganga Aarti. Anyone selling one is a tout. The ceremony is free for everyone.

Day 2 — The River and South Kashi

Day 2 moves away from the crowds and into the quieter southern half of the city.

Sunrise and the Southern Ghats

Time: 5:30 AM – 7:00 AM

Begin with the Subah-e-Banaras programme at Assi Ghat if you missed it on Day 1. The ceremony opens with Vedic chanting and a havan, then the aarti.

Alternative: Take a shorter sunrise walk along Assi Ghat, Tulsi Ghat, and Kedar Ghat. This stretch is calmer and more local than the Dashashwamedh-Manikarnika section.

Sankat Mochan and Durga Kund

Time: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Sankat Mochan Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is one of the most beloved temples in Varanasi. It is spacious and the queue moves quickly. Durga Kund is nearby — a large temple beside a rectangular tank, dedicated to the goddess Durga.

Security note: Carry as little as possible. Security at these temples is strict.

BHU and the Vishwanath Temple on Campus

Time: 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a green, spacious campus with its own Vishwanath Temple — a modern, calm counterpart to the old-city shrine. It is a good place to slow down, walk under the trees, and escape the noise of the lanes.

Sarnath — Where Buddha Gave His First Sermon

Time: 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Sarnath is about 10 km from the ghats, a 30–45 minute auto ride each way. It is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightenment.

What to see:

  • Dhamek Stupa — the massive cylindrical stupa marking the spot of the first sermon

  • The archaeological ruins and the Ashoka Pillar

  • Sarnath Museum — home to the original Ashoka Lion Capital, India’s national emblem

Timings and entry:

Site Timings Entry Fee
Dhamek Stupa and ruins 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily ₹25 for Indians; ₹300 for foreigners (often includes museum)
Sarnath Museum 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; closed Fridays Included in the combined ticket

Note: If you want to see the museum, avoid visiting on a Friday.

Banarasi Silk and the Evening

Time: 5:30 PM onwards

Return to the old city for Banarasi silk shopping near Godowlia, or take a final walk along Kedar Ghat. If you have energy left, book a seat for the Saptarishi Aarti at Kashi Vishwanath through the official portal — it is a quieter, seated aarti inside the temple, a fitting end to two days in Kashi.

Cantonment Quieter, wider roads, mid-range hotels ₹1,500–₹3,500

Conclusion

Two days in Varanasi is not enough to understand the city. It is enough to feel it.

You will feel it on the boat at dawn, when the ghats are still quiet and the river is turning gold. You will feel it in the queue at Kashi Vishwanath, pressed between pilgrims who have come from every corner of India. You will feel it at Manikarnika, where the fire never goes out. And you will feel it at the aarti, when seven priests raise their lamps and the whole riverfront goes silent.

The ghats will still be there tomorrow. The aarti will still happen tomorrow. But two days is enough to begin.

Plan around the sunset. Start before sunrise. Keep the afternoon slow. And let Kashi set the rhythm.

Jai Shri Kashi Vishwanath. Har Har Mahadev.

Ganga Dussehra Varanasi – Snan Timings & Rituals: The Complete Pilgrim's Handbook

Quick Answer: Ganga Dussehra 2026 falls on Monday, May 25, 2026 — the day the Dashami Tithi prevails at sunrise. The Dashami Tithi opens at 4:30 AM on May 25 and closes at 5:10 AM on May 26. The three valid snan windows are Brahma Muhurat (4:40–5:23 AM), Sunrise (around 6:06 AM), and Abhijit Muhurat (12:17–1:10 PM). This year the festival falls in Adhik Maas, a rare alignment that Varanasi astrologers say multiplies the merit of snan, daan, and puja. All ghats are free to enter, and there is no paid VIP access anywhere on the river. Contact Rohit at 7078723132 for a guided snan plan and priest arrangement.
