Namaste. I am Rohit, a guide. I have been helping pilgrims for the past 8 years. And in those years, I have noticed something about the pilgrims who come to Uttar Pradesh. They come for one city. They leave having seen three.
They come for Varanasi, because Kashi Vishwanath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. They add Ayodhya, because the Ram Mandir opened and everyone wants darshan. And then they discover Prayagraj, because it sits right between the two and the Triveni Sangam is one of the holiest spots in India.
This is the Kashi–Ayodhya–Prayagraj triangle. Three cities. Three deities. Three rivers. One journey.
The distances are short. The trains are frequent. And the total experience is one of the most complete pilgrimages in India — Shiva, Rama, and the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati.
This guide gives you the perfect 5-day plan. It covers the itinerary, the travel between cities, the costs, the accommodation, and the practical tips that make the journey smooth and meaningful.
Let us begin.
Why the Kashi-Ayodhya-Prayagraj Triangle Works
This triangle is not a random collection of cities. It is a complete spiritual circuit.
The Three Deities:
| City | Deity | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Kashi (Varanasi) | Lord Shiva | One of the 12 Jyotirlingas; the eternal city of moksha |
| Ayodhya | Lord Rama | The birthplace of Rama; the city of dharma |
| Prayagraj | The Sangam | The confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati |
The Spiritual Logic:
-
Kashi is where Shiva grants liberation
-
Ayodhya is where Rama lived his dharma
-
Prayagraj is where the rivers meet and the Kumbh happens
Together, they cover the three great paths of Hinduism — jnana (knowledge) in Kashi, karma (action) in Ayodhya, and bhakti (devotion) at the Sangam.
The Practical Logic:
-
All three cities are within 200 km of each other
-
Trains connect them in 2–4 hours
-
Each city has its own airport
-
The total trip can be done in 5 days
The Geography – Distances and Connections
Here is the honest picture.
| Route | Distance | Train Time | Road Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varanasi to Ayodhya | 200 km | 4 hours | 4.5 hours |
| Ayodhya to Prayagraj | 165 km | 3–4 hours | 3 hours |
| Prayagraj to Varanasi | 120 km | 2–3 hours | 2.5 hours |
The Key Insight: The triangle is compact. You can do it in any order. But the most practical sequence is Varanasi → Ayodhya → Prayagraj, because it follows the spiritual narrative from Shiva to Rama to the Sangam.
The Alternative: Start in Ayodhya, go to Prayagraj, end in Varanasi. This works if you are flying into Lucknow or Ayodhya.

Accessibility Tips for Elders
| City | Accessibility |
|---|---|
| Varanasi | Difficult. Steep ghats, narrow lanes. Use boats and e-rickshaws |
| Ayodhya | Easier. Wide roads near Ram Mandir, wheelchair available |
| Prayagraj | Moderate. Sangam has steps; use the boat directly |
For Elderly Parents:
-
Avoid the steep ghat steps in Varanasi; view the aarti from a boat
-
Use the Ram Mandir's senior citizen lane and wheelchair
-
In Prayagraj, take a boat to the Sangam instead of walking the ghats
-
Keep the pace slow. 3 cities in 5 days is a lot for elders
Common Mistakes First-Timers Make
1. Trying to do all three cities in 3 days
Impossible. 5 days is the minimum.
2. Skipping Prayagraj
Most travellers focus on Varanasi and Ayodhya and skip Prayagraj. But the Sangam is one of the holiest sites in India.
3. Not carrying original ID for Ram Mandir
A photocopy will not work.
4. Carrying phones inside Ram Mandir
Phones are banned. Leave them at the hotel.
5. Visiting during festival season
Dev Deepawali and Ram Navami are spectacular but impossible for a first trip.
6. Booking Varanasi hotels in the old city with elders
The lanes are narrow and the ghats are steep. Choose a hotel with car access.
7. Not booking trains in advance
The Varanasi–Ayodhya and Ayodhya–Prayagraj trains fill up. Book 2–3 weeks ahead.
8. Paying for "VIP darshan"
There is no paid VIP darshan at any of these temples.
Conclusion
The Kashi–Ayodhya–Prayagraj triangle is not just a route. It is a complete spiritual circuit. Shiva in Kashi. Rama in Ayodhya. The Sangam in Prayagraj.
Five days is enough to touch all three. It is not enough to exhaust them. But that is the nature of a pilgrimage. You do not finish it. You begin it.
Start in Varanasi. Watch the Ganga Aarti. Take the sunrise boat ride. Then move to Ayodhya. Stand before Ram Lalla. Then end in Prayagraj. Sit by the Sangam where the rivers meet.
This is the triangle. This is the journey. This is an experience of a lifetime.
Har Har Mahadev. Jai Shri Ram.
