Namaste. I am Rohit, a guide. I have been helping pilgrims for the past 8 years. While my home is in Braj, I have guided countless guests to Kashi and Prayagraj, two of the most sacred cities in India.
People often ask me the same question. When should we go? And the answer is not just about weather. It is about what you want to experience.
Varanasi, the city of Lord Shiva, is always intense. But the intensity changes with the season. In the winter, you can walk the ghats comfortably. In the summer, the stone burns your feet.
Prayagraj, the city of the Triveni Sangam, is quieter. But during the Magh Mela, it transforms into a temporary city of lakhs. And in October, after the monsoon, the rivers are full and the skies are clean.
This guide gives you the honest season-by-season picture for both cities. The weather. The crowds. The festivals. And the ground truth that most travel websites leave out.
Let us begin.

Both cities share the same ideal window: October to March. But within that window, each city has a slightly different peak.
Why the Two Cities Are Different
Varanasi and Prayagraj are only 120 km apart. They share the same climate. But they offer very different experiences.

Varanasi – Season-by-Season Guide
October to December – The Golden Window (Score: 5/5)
This is the best time to visit Varanasi. Temperatures drop to 15–28°C. The humidity vanishes. The ghats become walkable without breaking into a sweat.
Why It Works:
-
Boat rides at sunrise are crisp and clear
-
Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is comfortable to attend
-
Sarnath (10 km away) is pleasant to explore
-
November brings Dev Deepawali, when over a million diyas float on the Ganges
What to Expect:
-
Moderate to high crowds
-
Higher hotel prices
-
Book 2–3 months in advance for Dev Deepawali
Local Tip: November is the single best month for Varanasi. The weather is perfect, and the city is at its most festive.
January to February – The Cool Window (Score: 4/5)
Cold mornings (5–10°C) and foggy sunrise boat rides. The fog usually lifts by 10 AM. Fewer tourists than October–December. The Kite Festival in January is a local highlight — the sky above the ghats fills with thousands of kites.
What to Expect:
-
Cold mornings and evenings
-
Fog may delay boat rides
-
Fewer crowds than November
-
Carry warm clothes
March to April – The Closing Window (Score: 3/5)
Holi in Varanasi (March) is legendary but intense. By April, temperatures climb past 35°C. The window is closing.
What to Expect:
-
Holi crowds in March
-
Rising heat by April
-
Manageable if you start early
May to June – The Danger Window (Score: 1/5)
45°C+ is not unusual. The ghats become an oven. Heatstroke is a real risk. Locals themselves stay indoors. Do not come unless you have a very specific reason.
July to September – Monsoon (Score: 2/5)
The Ganges floods. Lower ghats go underwater. Boat rides may be cancelled. The upside: the city is lush, tourist crowds vanish, and you see Varanasi as locals live it. But the practical downsides are significant.
Prayagraj – Season-by-Season Guide
October to December – The Best Window (Score: 5/5)
October is Prayagraj's best month. Temperatures settle at 22–32°C. The post-monsoon Sangam is beautiful. Full rivers, clean skies, and boat rides resume. It is pleasant for walking the ghats and exploring the city.

Temperatures climb. By April, it is hot (37°C+). The window is closing. Not ideal for sightseeing.
May to June – Extreme Heat (Score: 1/5)

Conclusion
The best time to visit Varanasi and Prayagraj is not a single month. It is a choice. Choose October for clean skies and calm rivers. Choose November for Dev Deepawali. Choose January or February for Magh Mela. Avoid May and June unless you have a very specific reason.
But whatever you choose, do not rush. These are not cities to tick off a list. They are places to sit, to breathe, to listen. The Ganga will still be flowing tomorrow. The Sangam will still be meeting. Take your time.
This is Kashi. This is Prayagraj. This is an experience of a lifetime.
Har Har Mahadev. Jai Ganga Maiyya.
