Namaste. I am Rohit, a guide. I have been helping pilgrims for the past 8 years. While my home is in Braj, I have guided many guests through Kashi and Prayagraj — two cities that sit at the very heart of Hindu civilisation.
Varanasi is the city of Lord Shiva, where the Ganga flows past 88 ghats and the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat draws crowds from across the world. Prayagraj is the city of the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati meet — a site so sacred that it hosts the Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering on the planet.
But here is the thing most travellers do not realise. These two cities are just 120 km apart. They can be covered in a single trip. And the best time to visit them depends entirely on what you want — do you want the grandest festivals, or do you want peace and quiet? Do you want to take a dip in the Sangam during Magh Mela, or do you want to sit alone at the ghats and watch the river flow?
This guide is the honest month-by-month answer. I have covered the weather, the crowds, the festivals, and the ground reality for both cities. By the end, you will know exactly when to plan your trip.
Let us begin.

Why 2027 Is a Special Year
Two things make 2027 extraordinary for these two cities.
1. Magh Mela in Prayagraj (January 15 to March 6, 2027)
The annual Magh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings on Earth. In 2027, it runs for 50 days at the Triveni Sangam. The first snan is on Makar Sankranti (January 15), and the final snan is on Mahashivratri (March 6). Major bathing dates include Paush Purnima (January 22), Mauni Amavasya (February 6), and Basant Panchami (February 11). Over 20 crore devotees are expected to attend.
2. Dev Deepawali in Varanasi (November 13-14, 2027)
Dev Deepawali, the Diwali of the Gods, is celebrated on Kartik Purnima. In 2027, the lamps are lit on the evening of Saturday, November 13, during Pradosh Kaal (approximately 5:09 PM to 7:35 PM). Over 11 lakh earthen lamps illuminate all 88 ghats, turning the entire riverfront into a glittering river of light.

January brings crisp mornings and cool days. The famous Varanasi kite festival fills the sky above the ghats with thousands of kites. Morning boat rides on the Ganga are serene, with mist rising off the water.
February is when Maha Shivaratri draws devotees to Kashi Vishwanath for all-night vigils. Vasant Panchami is also celebrated at the temple with grand Tilakotsav rituals.
March sees Holi celebrated with restraint but deep devotion, especially at temples. The famous Masan Holi at Manikarnika Ghat is a unique experience. Days start warming up.
April marks the beginning of the heat. Ram Navami processions are held. Plan temple visits for early morning or late evening only.
May and June are scorching. Varanasi's average high in May is 41°C and can cross 45°C. Locals themselves stay indoors. Do not come unless you have a very specific reason.
July to September is monsoon season. The Ganges floods, lower ghats go underwater, and boat rides may be cancelled. The upside is the city is lush, tourist crowds vanish, and you see Varanasi as locals live it.
October is when the monsoon retreats and the tourist season begins. The ghats become walkable again. The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is comfortable to attend.
November is the single best month for Varanasi. Dev Deepawali transforms the ghats into a spectacle of light. The weather is ideal — 15-30°C with low humidity. The Ganga Aarti feels transcendent.
December is excellent. Mornings are cold but days are sunny and pleasant. Crowds are moderate. All temples run full schedules.

January is when Magh Mela begins on January 15 (Makar Sankranti). The first snan takes place on this day. Expect crores of devotees at the Triveni Sangam. If you are not attending the Mela, avoid this month.
February continues the Magh Mela. Mauni Amavasya (February 6) is the most significant bathing day, with 5 crore pilgrims expected. Basant Panchami (February 11) is another major snan date. Maghi Purnima (February 20) is the final major bathing festival.
March sees the Magh Mela conclude on Mahashivratri (March 6). The first few days are still crowded, but after March 6, the city returns to its quiet rhythm.
April and May bring intense heat. Prayagraj's average high in May is 43°C, and heat waves are common. Almost all sightseeing is outdoors. This is not a good time to visit.
June is equally hot, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 42°C. The monsoon approaches by late June, bringing some relief but also humidity.
July to September is monsoon season. The rivers flow fast and unpredictable. Flooding can occur, and the Sangam may not be accessible for bathing. The city turns lush green post-initial showers.
October is when the weather becomes pleasant again. The post-monsoon greenery is beautiful. Crowds are low. This is a good time for reflective visits to the Sangam.
November is excellent. The weather is dry and comfortable. The Sangam is calm and ideal for boat rides and holy dips. Crowds are moderate.
December is one of the best months. The famous Allahabad guavas are available. Migratory birds hover near the Sangam. The weather is pleasant throughout the day.
